A sun of righteousness will shine for you, with healing in its rays. (Malachi 3/20)

All nature including humanity is solar-powered. Take away sunlight and all life on earth would soon perish.

Doctors and natural healers from ancient times relied on sunlight to mend wounds, treat bone diseases like rickets or lung infections like tuberculosis and before antibiotics sunlight was an efficient germ killer.

Since the 1980s, physicians and cancer groups have regularly warned the public against the potential health dangers of direct sunlight on skin. As a result, many people have stayed out of the sunlight completely, or over use UV protection products, all in the hopes of lowering their risk of skin cancer. This behavior has created a vitamin D crisis that resent studies show may actually be the link to many cancers and illnesses. Most people have low levels of Vitamin D, leaving them at higher risk for a host of diseases including cancer, osteoporosis and rickets.

A 2009 study at Leeds University found that higher levels of Vitamin D were linked to improved skin cancer survival odds. Other studies have found that Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus, regulates blood sugar levels, hastens the death of tumor cells, regulates blood pressure and aids in many other important functions in the body. With so much reasearch proving the importance of vitamin D some are calling it "the fountain of youth".

The body is better able to use the vitamin D it makes itself from sun exposure than that which it gets from the diet. Most people need about ten to fifteen minutes of sun exposure at least twice a week on the face, arms, hands, or back without sunscreen for adequate amounts of vitamin D. For those living in Northern climates during the winter months, this can be difficult to do so the best way to get enough vitamin D is from foods and perhaps supplements. Experts say that people with a high risk of vitamin D deficiency should consume 1000 IU of vitamin D each day. Good food sources of vitamin D are pure cod liver oil, salmon, tuna, fortified milk and egg yolks.
